Tutor FAQ

Below are a number of frequently asked questions which prospective tutors ask when they are enquiring into registering with Pass Plus Tutors

Q1. Who are Pass Plus Tutors?
Pass Plus Tutors operate as a private home-tuition agency who specialise in matching school pupils (primary to A-level), who require extra help with their studies, with a suitably qualified tutor. We operate throughout Nottinghamshire.

Q2. Who can tutor?
Tutors who register with Pass Plus Tutors include current teachers, retired teachers, postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and professionals who have gained a relevant degree. We do not register undergraduates and due to working restrictions we are unable to register non-EU postgraduate students.

Q3. I am not a qualified teacher, does this matter?
No. Although some parents do specifically ask for a teacher because they feel a teacher is the only person that can help their child, you do not necessarily have to be a teacher to be a good private-home tutor. Parents seek extra help for their children, because for whatever reason, the pupil’s school is not providing sufficient help to their child. Therefore, tutors who are not teachers approach lessons from a different angle. An effective private home tutor is someone who knows their subject well and can explain topics in a way that the pupil understands. The only problem with not being a teacher is that you may have to sell yourself a little more when you contact the parents initially.

Q4. What exactly does private home-tutoring involve?
Conducting private home-tuition involves travelling to the pupil’s house once a week for 1-2 hours and helping the pupil through explaining and improving understanding of difficult topics, helping with assessed coursework, improving confidence by praising the pupil, improving the pupil’s exam technique by working through past exam papers.

Q5. How much does it cost to register with Pass Plus Tutors?
Pass Plus Tutors do not charge tutors a registration fee to become registered with us. However, if you do not have an Enhanced Criminal Bureau (CRB) police check you will be asked to obtain one of these (see below)

Q6. How much can I earn?
Parents pay the tutor in full at the end of each lesson. The fee paid by the parent includes a small commission that is payable to Pass Plus Tutors at the end of each calendar month. As a tutor registered with Pass Plus Tutors you can expect to earn between £14.50 – 21.50 per hour depending on the level of tuition undertaken.

Q7. What is a CRB check and do I have to pay to obtain it?
Once your completed application form has been received by Pass Plus Tutors your references given by you will be taken up. Once this has been successfully completed and we are confident that you are suitable to tutor and we can match you to prospective pupils we will ask you to obtain an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check if you do not already have one. This is a fundamental part of our commitment to providing a safe home tutoring service. The cost of this is £36 and is payable by the tutor. Please note that you will redeem this outlay after just one/two sessions of tutoring and we will only ask you to obtain one if we are confident we will be able to match you with a pupil! Remember that it is in our best interests to get you up and running as quickly as possible and to match you with a pupil. An enhanced CRB disclosure is a valuable and transferable document which can be used for other forms of employment applications. Details of how to obtain an enhanced CRB disclosure will be given to you upon successful registration with Pass Plus Tutors.

Q8. Is there a minimum number of hours you have to commit to each week?
Tutors who are registered with Pass Plus Tutors do not have to work a minimum number of hours per week. You can tutor for as little as one hour per week or for as many hours as you would like.

Q9. Do you provide the syllabuses and examination material?
Pass Plus Tutors are able to provide guidance and direct you to where you can obtain syllabuses, past exam papers and teaching material

Q10. What support do you provide to tutors?
We pride ourselves on the high quality of the initial and ongoing advice we provide to tutors registered with Pass Plus Tutors. Tutors are provided with all the relevant tutoring documents you require to conduct your tuition effectively and provide all tutors with a ‘Guide to tutoring’ detailing how you should go about conducting your tutoring.
